He Sees You in the Ordinary

“She said to him, 'You are the God who sees me,' for she said, 'Have I truly seen him who looks after me?'”

— Genesis 16:13

Hagar said this in the desert — exhausted, alone, completely out of options. Sound familiar? Maybe your desert looks like a minivan full of arguing kids, a sink full of dishes at 9pm, or a teenager who hasn't looked you in the eye in three days. Maybe it's the invisible kind of tired, where you're doing everything and no one notices. Here's the thing about Hagar's moment: God didn't appear to her in the temple or during quiet time with her Bible and a latte. He met her in the mess. In the middle of nowhere. When she was running away. And the name she gave him — El Roi, the God who sees — she didn't come up with that in a worship service. She figured it out in the wilderness. You are not invisible. Not to him. Every cup of water you refill, every nightmare you talk someone through at 2am, every 'I love you' that goes unanswered — he sees every single one. You are known. You are found.

Today’s Prayer

God, on the days I feel completely unseen, remind me that you are El Roi — the One who sees me right here, right now, in all of this. Thank you for finding me in the wilderness and calling it holy ground.
